Generating mechanical engineering problem-solving tips can be a daunting experience as the list of tips can be endless. However, from my experience, there are some basic tips that young mechanical engineers ought to have to improve their understanding of mechanical engineering and their ME designing capabilities.

  3. Master your CAD programs - SketchUp, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Catia,
  4. Generate formulae sheets - it helps to be have all your formulae in one place for each subject.

  6. Learn to follow design standards - In most design roles, an engineer has to comply with multiple design standards that are updated periodically. A young engineer should be familiar with standards in their desired industry. For example, in the solar PV industry, the following standards exist:
    1. UL 1741 - Inverters, Converters, Controllers and Interconnection System Equipment for Use With Distributed Energy Resources
    2. IEEE 1547 - IEEE Interconnecting Distributed Resources with Electric Power Systems
    3. UL 1703 - Flat-Plate Photovoltaic Modules and Panels
    4. NFPA 70 - National Electric Code
    5. UL 2703 - Mounting systems, mounting devices, clamping/retention devices, and ground lugs for use with flat-plate photovoltaic modules and panels
    6. IEEE 1013 - IEEE Recommended Practice for Sizing Lead-Acid Batteries for Stand-Alone Photovoltaic (PV) Systems
    7. IEC 61215 - Crystalline silicon terrestrial photovoltaic (PV) modules - Design qualification and type approval.
    8. And many local codes/standards
